The department of Coastal Conservation with BC Métis Federation was established in the summer of 2022; however, the conservation journey began many years earlier, in the Spring of 2019.
The programs and projects that are delivered by the department of Coastal Conservation are made possible by the support of BC Métis Federation, and through funding provided from the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
The department consists of two current and ongoing projects; the Co-Developing Community Response project, and the Aquatic Habitat Restoration Fund.
The Coastal Water Protectors was created in the Spring of 2021 with a team of eight BC Métis Federation members. Now, in 2023, the team has expanded nearly three times in size and consists of environmentally conscious and caring people committed to caring for coastlines through conservations efforts throughout the province of British Columbia. The Coastal Water Protectors actively and consistently engage with community members through interactive activities, provincial surveys and coastal related events. The team participates in frequent courses and training and are certified in many aspects relating to spill response and management and aquatic conservation.
