The Conservation Department of BC Métis Federation is dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship and community engagement across British Columbia. While our journey began with the Coastal Water Protectors initiative, our work has expanded beyond coastal conservation to encompass a broader range of environmental efforts across the province.

Through hands-on initiatives like “Sweeping the Shores” cleanups, youth retreats, conservation conferences, educational workshops, and community events, we bring Métis community members together to take meaningful action. Educational programs such as school visits, webinars, and the Aqua Agenda podcast empower individuals with knowledge and resources to contribute to sustainability efforts. Additionally, programs like the spill kit initiative provide practical tools for environmental response.

The department currently operates two key projects:

These initiatives are made possible through the support of BC Métis Federation and funding provided by the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada.

Although the Coastal Water Protectors name and logo may still be recognized in some areas, our department now operates as the Conservation Department of BC Métis Federation, reflecting our expanded mission to preserve BC’s natural heritage in all its forms. By combining direct action with education and collaboration, we are committed to strengthening environmental awareness and conservation efforts for future generations.
