Join us at "Welcome the Kokanee" to celebrate kokanee salmon, learn about conservation, and connect with the community!

Event Recap:

The Conservation Department of BC Métis Federation proudly participated in today’s vibrant “Welcome the Kokanee” event, held in collaboration with Regional District of Central Okanagan. This annual celebration, which marks the return of kokanee salmon to the region, was an incredible opportunity to engage with the community and raise awareness about conservation efforts that benefit both local ecosystems and the Métis community.

Our team had the pleasure of partnering with the Métis Association of Central Okanagan (MACO), represented by Louise Lambert, whose dedication to preserving Métis culture and natural resources was felt throughout the event. Together, we helped educate attendees about the vital role kokanee salmon play in the Okanagan’s freshwater ecosystems and shared insights on how we can work together to safeguard their habitats.

Throughout the day, we met new friends, forged meaningful connections, and strengthened our bonds with organizations that share our passion for conservation. Among them were the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue and Environmental Conservation Organization, who both received spill kits from our department. These spill kits are a crucial tool in preventing the spread of aquatic pollutants, helping to protect Okanagan’s waterways from invasive species and other contaminants.

The event was not just about education but about fostering a sense of community around environmental stewardship. As we welcomed the return of the kokanee salmon, we also embraced the shared responsibility of ensuring a healthy, thriving ecosystem for future generations.

We’re grateful for the partnerships and conversations that took place today and look forward to continuing our work to protect the natural beauty of the Okanagan. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, learned, and engaged with us—it was an unforgettable day of connection, learning, and action!
