Tea Time with Coastal Water Protectors 

The Director, Manager, and a team of five dedicated Coastal Water Protectors recently participated in a transformative day-long tabletop exercise at Qanis Bay. This strategic gathering brought, Canadian Coast Guard, local First Nations, the Canadian Army, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Environment Canada, WCMRC, and others, for a collaborative exploration of response strategies in the face of potential incidents.

Post-exercise, the team conducted a thorough debriefing session to analyze their performance, share insights, and identify areas for improvement. One notable outcome of this event is the initiation of plans to establish an 'incident response team.' Comprising of qualified and trained Coastal Water Protectors, this specialized team aims to enhance our ability to respond effectively to incidents or support ongoing response efforts.

The Qanis Bay Tabletop Exercise marks a significant stride in our commitment to proactive coastal protection. As we continue to develop and strengthen our capabilities, this event serves as a compass, guiding us toward a future where our coastal communities are resilient in the face of environmental challenges. Wilderness Awareness Training 

We are thrilled to invite you to the upcoming Coastal Conference, a gathering dedicated to the protection and preservation of our invaluable coastal ecosystems. This event will serve as a platform for passionate individuals, environmental advocates, and community leaders to come together and discuss the vital importance of safeguarding our shores.

The Coastal Conference will feature a series of engaging sessions, including talks by distinguished speakers from various organizations, documentary screenings, and opportunities to connect with local vendors who share our commitment to sustainability. Through these activities, we aim to inspire, educate, and foster a sense of responsibility towards our coastal environments.

The Coastal Conservation department of BC Métis Federation was proud to host the Coastal Conference on October 21, 2023, a gathering dedicated to fostering awareness and action for the protection of our coastal ecosystems.

The event, held in Langley, BC, brought together 64 attendees as well as 14 guest speakers. Topics included aquatic conservation, eco lifestyle, palaeontology and climatology, invasive species, and youth initiatives. Métis Elder Betty Fisher gave both opening and closing prayers, and the event was emceed by Coastal Water Protector and BCMF member Jocelyn Mcintosh.

"The first ever Coastal Conference exceeded our expectations," said Angel Fisher, Director of Coastal Conservation. That sentiment was shared by Zia Yazdani, Coastal Manager. He said "We left feeling full of gratitude for a full house in attendance and a stellar lineup of guest speakers, all sharing inspiring stories that motivate."

With a general atmosphere of optimism and forward-looking activities and conversations, the Coastal Conference inspired, educated, and fostered a sense of responsibility towards coastal environments.

Our best advice is to dress for the weather! You aren’t going to want to wear a raincoat and sweater if it’s sunny out, but you will if it is chilly and damp.

Be prepared to be active and comfortable so wear clothes that allow you to move. Jeans are not advisable – wear leggings, non-restrictive shorts or sport pants and you have a much better experience. 

We do push you out from the beach once you are in your boat and bring you back in, but do be prepared to get wet so bring a towel and a change of clothes just in case.

Coastal Seawolves Adventure Day: Kayaking & Fishing

A remarkable day unfolded as the Coastal Water Protectors hosted four engaging workshops for approximately 100 Indigenous grade six students in Pitt Meadows. Each student received a Sitka Spruce tree from @natsnursery, a symbol of their commitment to a greener, more sustainable future, and actively planted these stunning coastal trees. The workshops fostered a profound understanding of water protection and conservation, leaving a lasting impact on these young environmental stewards. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Tracy, Jocelyn, Zia, and Angel for their pivotal roles in making this day a resounding success. This event underscored the transformative power of education and inspired a sense of responsibility towards our environment, promising more exciting initiatives from the Coastal Water Protectors in the future.

The Coastal Water Protectors are excited to engage with grade 6 students, offering workshops and activities aimed at nurturing an understanding and appreciation of our precious water resources. 

School District 42 'Water Protection' Event

Activities include demonstrations, displays, tours, activities, crafts and live entertainment. We’ll be sharing details soon about the event schedule for 2023, as well as ecosystem restoration events across Burnaby where volunteers can take direct action to support our vital salmonid habitats like creeks and streams.

In 1980, Burnaby resident and river conservationist, Mark Angelo, founded BC Rivers Day in an effort to raise awareness about the importance that rivers play in our environments as well as the need for better river management to protect these vital resources.

In 1993, the City of Burnaby was the first municipality in BC to proclaim BC River’s Day. Since then, the City works with community partners to host an annual community event.

Thousands of Canadians now celebrate each year making this Canada’s largest river appreciation event. In 2005, the United Nations established World Rivers Day which is now a global event to celebrate rivers each year on the fourth Sunday of every September.

Join us at 6501 Deer Lake Ave for this free family-friendly event and learn about our local waterways and restoration efforts to help protect these environments.

World Rivers Day

The Kikineen Festival, held at Mission Creek Regional Park, Kelowna, BC, celebrated the spectacle of spawning salmon, specifically the kikinee (Kokanee) salmon. Attendees had the opportunity to join guided walks along the spawning channel, witnessing the salmon in action and learning about their environmental and cultural significance. The event featured live music, arts and crafts, interactive storytelling, and information booths representing various community partners.

The festival began with a Syilx welcome and was accompanied by performances from the North Okanagan Pipes and Drums. Magician Leif David entertained both children and adults, followed by a dance party on the lawn featuring giant puppets. The event concluded with a performance by the Nice & Easy music duo.

It's estimated that over 500 people attended the festival, with parking lots filled to capacity. Throughout the day, there were engaging activities such as Kiki the Eco Elf and a salmon storytelling tent, making the event inclusive and enjoyable for the entire community.

The Kikineen Festival served as an excellent platform to raise awareness about the Coastal Water Protectors program and foster potential collaborations with like-minded organizations in the region.

Louise Lambert represented the Coastal Water Protectors (CWP) at the Kikineen Festival, held at Mission Creek Regional Park in Kelowna, BC, on September 9, 2023. The primary purpose of her attendance was to inform and promote the Coastal Water Protectors program within the Okanagan Valley. Additionally, she recommended that the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) include CWP as an informative booth in their future events and explore potential partnerships.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) showed a highly receptive attitude towards Louise Lambert's suggestion to include CWP in future events. They expressed their intention to extend an invitation to CWP for future collaborations, with Lambert following up on this opportunity.

The Kikineen Festival provided an excellent opportunity for Louise Lambert to engage with various organizations, many of which expressed interest in the Coastal Water Protectors program and potential partnerships. These organizations included:

Central Okanagan Naturalists Club, dedicated to learning about and preserving natural areas.

Oasiss (Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society), Summerland, BC.

All these organizations were provided with the CWP Volume 2 brochure for reference, along with Louise Lambert's BC Metis Federation business card for future contact. She also pointed out the QR code on the brochure, which seemed to delight the recipients. Notably, the Central Okanagan Naturalist Club expressed interest in programs for children.

Aquatic Paint Workshop held in Terrace, BC, was a memorable experience that brought together art enthusiasts and nature lovers for a creative and educational journey. Under the expert guidance of our talented instructor, Louise Lambert, participants delved into the world of aquatic landscapes, with a particular focus on marine life and the stunning coastal scenery.

During the workshop, attendees had the opportunity to explore various painting techniques, experiment with an array of materials and colors, and, most importantly, express their unique visions of aquatic beauty. Whether you were a seasoned artist or a beginner, this workshop offered something for everyone.

Terrace, BC, provided the perfect backdrop for this artistic adventure. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the coastal landscape, participants found inspiration around every corner. The workshop not only honed their artistic skills but also deepened their connection with the local environment.

Festival is a youth-led initiative that aims to promote Ocean Conservation, Reform, Climate Optimism, and Action by bringing our community together to amplify sustainable local businesses, raise awareness about the work of local environmental organizations, and be a space that fosters community connection, climate optimism, and climate action. There will be booths for environmental organizations, interactive educational activities, and sustainable small businesses with the goal of promoting awareness amongst individuals about the climate crisis and how they can support the movement in ways both big and small. Tea Time with Coastal Conservation

The beach cleanup event was a resounding success, with a strong turnout from individuals, families, and friends eager to restore the natural beauty of our coastline. Participants were provided with all the necessary cleaning supplies, but many also brought their own, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. The event began with an inspiring introduction, emphasizing the importance of a litter-free beach, and participants were encouraged to view the cleanup as a fun and rewarding experience. Throughout the day, volunteers combed the sand, picking up trash and debris while enjoying the generous refreshments provided by Tim Hortons. The event created a sense of unity and purpose as participants worked together to transform the beach. By the end of the day, our collective efforts had made a significant impact, replacing litter with cleanliness and natural beauty. We express our gratitude to all who participated and look forward to future events as we continue to create a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone to enjoy.

Over 80 participants joined the Coastal Water Protectors at Kitsilano Beach on June 11, 2023, for a successful beach clean-up event. With over 100 registered attendees, the community demonstrated their strong commitment to environmental preservation. The participants worked together to remove litter and debris, protecting marine life and maintaining the beach's natural beauty. Following the clean-up, everyone enjoyed pizza and beverages, fostering connections among like-minded individuals. The event highlighted the power of community engagement and left a lasting impact on the participants and the environment. The Coastal Water Protectors look forward to organizing future events for continued community involvement in preserving the beach.

World Ocean Day: Beach Clean Up & Informational Session 

The "Building Bridges" networking event, organized in collaboration with Ocean Wise for World Ocean Week, aimed to connect and foster information sharing among ocean enthusiasts. BC Métis Coastal Conservation was invited to the "Building Bridges" networking event and the entire core team seized this opportunity to participate.

The event provided a safe space for networking, collaboration, and exchanging ideas. Informal interactions allowed for personal connections and mentorship opportunities. Exhibitions showcased innovative initiatives by Ocean Wise and participants, inspiring conservation efforts. The event successfully united passionate individuals committed to protecting our oceans, facilitating knowledge exchange and empowering attendees to safeguard marine ecosystems.

The event, organized in collaboration with Ocean Wise for World Ocean Week, aimed to create a secure and inclusive space for passionate individuals to gather, connect, and exchange valuable insights on their conservation efforts.

Networking Event: “Building Bridges”

During the event, participants had the opportunity to connect with our dedicated team from the BC Métis Federation's Coastal Conservation Department. They provided valuable information about coastal conservation and emphasized the importance of keeping our beaches clean and litter-free. All necessary tools and supplies were provided for a safe and efficient clean-up, but participants were also encouraged to bring their own gear if preferred. As a special treat, a local café provided delicious goodies for everyone to enjoy. It was a pleasant evening that not only allowed attendees to contribute to ocean preservation but also provided a chance to make new friends and engage with the community.

In celebration of Ocean Week Canada, we are hosting an early evening beach clean-up. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a positive and meaningful impact on our coastal environment while enjoying the company of like-minded individuals.

On a beautiful day at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo, BC, approximately 30 community members gathered for a Beach Clean-Up & Informational Session. The event aimed to make a positive impact on the local environment while fostering unity and responsibility among participants.

Armed with gloves and garbage bags, the enthusiastic volunteers combed through the sandy shores, diligently collecting and sorting litter. Simultaneously, an educational session raised awareness about environmental preservation and responsible waste management. Experts shared insights on sustainable practices, recycling, and reducing waste, empowering attendees to make conscious choices in their daily lives. Refreshments from White Rabbit Coffee were provided as a token of appreciation, fueling participants' energy throughout the event.

The Beach Clean-Up & Informational Session at Neck Point Park not only achieved its primary goal of cleaning up the beach but also inspired a renewed commitment to protecting the natural resources of the community. Participants left the event with a heightened sense of responsibility and a determination to continue making positive changes. The Maa Market held on the North Shore was an absolute blast, packed with excitement, entertainment, and an incredible opportunity for networking. Among the diverse array of stalls and activities, the Coastal Water Protectors showcased their commitment to conservation and drew attention to ways in which people could contribute to the cause. The Jericho Beach clean-up and informational event held on May 15th was a resounding success, attracting a strong turnout of nearly thirty participants. This event held particular significance as it was being filmed by Vancouver's renowned organization, 'The Cinematheque,' as part of a collaborative project with grade 10 students involved in the TREK Outdoor Program.

The event itself encompassed a beach clean-up effort, engaging participants in hands-on environmental stewardship. The enthusiastic turnout and collective efforts of the attendees resulted in a substantial impact on the cleanliness and preservation of Jericho Beach. By actively involving community members in this important endeavor, the event successfully demonstrated the power of collective action in safeguarding our natural environment.

The Deep Cove Spring Market, held in North Vancouver in May 2023, was a vibrant event that brought together over 70 local vendors from across the province of British Columbia. The market served as a platform for local artists, artisans, distilleries, educational initiatives, conservation awareness booths, and outdoor greenery.

The department of BC Mètis Coastal Conservation dedicated to conserving the coastal water ecosystems of British Columbia. They set up an educational booth, where they engaged with over 100 market goers, providing valuable information about their conservation efforts in collaboration with the BC Metis Federation.

The Coastal Water Protectors' booth also offered an interactive educational game, designed to raise awareness among children and youth about the impact of our daily actions on the environment and aquatic ecosystems. This engaging activity aimed to inspire the younger generation to become mindful stewards of the environment.

Overall, the Deep Cove Spring Market proved to be a successful event that showcased the diversity and talent of local vendors, while also promoting environmental awareness and conservation through the presence of organizations like the BC Mètis Coastal Conservation.

Join the Coastal Water Protectors in an online Transport Canada approved course taught by an instructor from Safer Oceans on marine emergency duties.

Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (SDVBS) Course

On May 2nd and 3rd, the Director and Manager of Coastal Conservation attended a simulated spill response scenario at Monck Provincial Park with Trans Mountain. The two-day event was aimed at improving the team's emergency response skills and protocols, in case of an oil spill.

The first day of the event was focused on covering emergency response equipment usage and protocols. The attendees were taught how to use the various equipment necessary in case of a spill, such as booms, skimmers, and pumps. They were also trained on the different response protocols that need to be followed in case of a spill incident.

On the second day, the exercise involved a simulated spill incident that required the team to put into practice all the skills and protocols they had learned on the first day. The simulated incident involved oil pollution in Monck Lake, and the team had to follow a detailed incident report to establish an Incident Command System.

To address the spill, three boats were engaged to deploy boom and contain the spill, while crews on land set up a wildlife station to help protect wildlife in the affected area. Additionally, hot and cold stations were set up to provide support and refreshments to the response team working in the field.

The two-day exercise provided valuable insights into the various steps and protocols involved in responding to and maintaining an incident, whether on land or in water. The team was able to put into practice their skills and protocols in a simulated environment, allowing them to be better prepared in case of an actual emergency. Overall, the event was a success, and the team came away with a better understanding of the importance of emergency response preparedness in environmental conservation.

The department of Coastal Conservation will be taking part in Trans Mountain Pipeline Spill Deployment Exercise on Nicola Lake, at Monck Provincial Park. The two-day exercise will consist of equipment training for responders, observation of an on water equipment deployment and a simulated spill deployment.

On April 24th, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School was the proud host of the highly anticipated Vancouver School Board: Sustainability Conference 2023. The event brought together students from grades 10, 11, and 12 from all over the district to engage in discussions and activities centered around the theme of "Zeroing in on Sustainability."

The Coastal Water Protectors team visited Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School on that day and participated in the day's events, including facilitating two engaging workshops, presentations, games, and prizes for participants in grades 10, 11, and 12. The team's passion for environmental protection and sustainability was evident throughout their presentations, and their enthusiasm and expertise resonated with students of all ages.

The theme of this year's conference was 'Zeroing in on Sustainability', and the Coastal Water Protectors' visit provided an important perspective on the urgent need to take action to protect our coastal waters and preserve the natural world for future generations.

The workshops and presentations led by the Coastal Water Protectors were informative, engaging, and interactive, providing students with a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental sustainability and the role that they can play in making a positive difference in their communities and beyond.

Overall, the Vancouver School Board's Sustainability Conference 2023 was a fantastic event that highlighted the importance of taking action to protect our planet and inspired attendees to work towards a more sustainable future. The visit from the Coastal Water Protectors was a valuable addition to the conference and helped to reinforce the critical importance of environmental stewardship and conservation.

The Coastal Conservation team will be presenting two workshops district wide to students in grade 10-12 on ‘Zeroing in on a greener future’.

Thank you to anyone who joined us for the beach clean up event in honor of World Earth Day on April 22nd. Despite the poor weather conditions, we had an amazing turnout of around two dozen dedicated individuals who were committed to keeping our coastlines clean and protecting our planet.

As a token of appreciation, all participants received a $10.00 Tim Hortons gift card and a mini bag of wildflowers to plant on World Earth Day. Complimentary local goodies were also provided to keep everyone fueled and energized throughout the event.

We're proud of the impact that we were able to make on our community and the environment, and we couldn't have done it without the support of our amazing volunteers. Thank you again to everyone who participated in our beach clean up event, and we look forward to seeing you at our future events!
